I don’t think Mississippi is alone in doing this.
The U.S. Department of Justice has accused Lauderdale County, Mississippi of running a ‘school-to-prison’ pipeline where children are being imprisoned for minor, alleged school disciplinary infractions. They found that African-American children and children with disabilities are being punished at abnormal rates for things as simple as defiance.
CNN reports that in a letter the DOJ accuses “Meridian police of automatically arresting all students referred by the city’s public schools and then sending them to the county juvenile justice system, ‘where existing due process protections are illusory and inadequate.’”
